Sandemose, Aksel

Emigrating to Norway from Denmark in 1930, Aksel Sandemose (1899-1965) made his breakthrough as a Norwegian writer with the publication of the first of a total of four books about sailor Espen Arnakke, EN SJØMANN GÅR I LAND. A FUGITIVE CROSSES HIS TRACKS changed the course of Norwegian - and perhaps Scandinavian - fiction. Like several of his books, DET SVUNDNE ER EN DRØM is a psychological crime story based on the themes of jealousy, guilt and punishment. His works have been widely translated.

Aksel Sandemose's collected works - novels, narratives and essays - have been published by Aschehoug under the title Complete Works; this is the first time this has been done. Complete Works comprises 25 books in 15 volumes.

In 2004 Aschehoug published FLYKTNINGEN - AKSEL SANDEMOSE. EN BIOGRAFI, a personal biography, written by Aksel Sandemose's youngest son, the philosopher Jørgen Sandemose.
