The Persian Gulf is on fire, the Saudi kingdom has been toppled by jihadists and a new cold war seems to be under way. Russia has chosen to sell her oil and gas to China, and the energy crisis is making itself felt in Europe and the US. When huge new oil and gas reserves are discovered on Svalbard, Norway suddenly becomes the Western world’s main supplier of fossile fuels. In light of this global development politologist and expert on the Northern sphere Mariangela Nielsen warns the Prime Minister’s Office that Norway’s new position is vulnerable in the changed geopolitical climate. And soon she finds herself under surveillance by unknown men. At the same time the former officer Martin Mæle is asked to cooperate with the CIA in the investigaton of the disappearance of a man who led a top secret missile development project for the USA at the Kongsberg Arms Factory. When Mariangela gets into trouble and ends up in the newspaper, Martin realizes that the two cases might be connected and he decides to seek her out.
