The Composer

Bøge, Kari: Komponisten

The story of a man who, after experiencing the simultaneous collapse of his carreer, marriage and health, takes responsibility to rebuild himself and his life.

Following the premiere of his latest symphony, the composer Eskil Ås is burned-out. Neither his own nor his employer’s expectations have been fulfilled, and a conflict has been building up between himself and his wife, a conflict that he just doesn’t know how to deal with At the same time he is struck by a serious disease. To recover he retreats to his cottage by the sea, only to find himself all alone as his body collapses.

The novel takes the reader through the breakdown, the pain and the time in the hospital, through despair, break-up and the liberating desperation that lets him out on the other side, in an entirely new place.
