In the Years Following

Borg, Arne: I årene som fulgte

Torfinn Sars grows up with his mother in a basement apartment in Oslo. His mother lived through the 60s, and works as a make-up artist for the theater. While she works, Torfinn stays with his grandmother. The difference between the bourgeois lifestyle of his grandmother and the chaos at his mother’s marks Torfinn’s childhood deeply.

One day Torfinn receives a letter from his father, the photographer Fredrik Løwe in Copenhagen. Their encounter is of great significance to teenaged Torfinn, but they don’t stay in touch. Slowly, Torfinn’s glorified picture of his father fades. The years go by, Torfinn’s friends and acquaintances get degrees, jobs and families, while Torfinn avoids doing anything with his life. Eventually he is left with a vague, but precarious feeling that life has failed him. What in the eighties seemed to be a promising start, turned out to be all he got.
