Under the Deep Shadows

Thirty years ago, Wilhelm fled to the US. Now, his mother Evelyn contacts him. She tells him that she is going to die, and she also says something that makes Wilhelm get on the first flight back to Norway. Evelyn finds Wilhelm’s son Robert, who is in Oslo as a guest performer. She gives him an envelope with a map and an old key. In a cabin deep in the woods of Hedmark, dangerous secrets are buried. Wilhelm comes here, and so does Robert with his son Lukas. They probably shouldn’t have. This is something as rare as a ghost story – a dramatic and eventful story of an excommunicated family.

Kari Fredrikke Brænne isn't afraid to use powerful devices. In any event, she has found the fine balance between the cruelties she tells us about and a literary voice that doesn't give away more than is necessary. She chooses never to linger on the details of her descriptions, and this reserved style drives the book forward.
The book stands out from the crowd in many ways,. It has a rare linguistic quality, is at the highest level of composition, and has a flair for the dramatic, yet this is tempered by narrative style.
Many talk about the difficult second book, but with her second book Kari F. Brænne has only tightened her grip.
