The Voice

Brunsvik, Hilde: Stemmen

"He spotted me before I saw him. But later he would say that he had never felt so seen. So scrutinised. “No one had looked at me like that before. For a moment I fell completely out of the conversation.”

A moment. It wasn’t more than that. Almost nothing. "

Love can take root even in the hothouse atmosphere of a modern metropolis. The young woman who is the central figure and narrator of this novel is closer to the woods and animal life of her native land than are most of those about her; she also possesses a latent talent - a singing voice that has never reached fulfilment. Her boyfriend, however, who makes a living by renovating old flats, is more at home in the harsh reality of urban society.
This raises the question of whether it is possible to reconcile a love of nature with city life.
