In the third novel about the half brothers Sam and John and their friend Fanny, John Burden travels from Kansas to the northeastern parts of the US. He has heard rumours about easy money in the lumber and paper industries in Maine, but together with his half brother and Fanny's son, John arrives in a lumber community reduced to rubble by a long-lasting strike, and meets a population ridden by violent conflicts.
