Incontro

Gjeitanger, Anne: Incontro

Two women speak in this novel. Tale and Mimi haven’t seen each other in several years when Tale comes to visit Mimi, who has gone to live in her childhood home at Jæren, on the south-western coast of Norway. Mimi used to be Tale’s art teacher in Hamburg, and the two became close friends. Now, Mimi is featuring her first solo exhibition, and the twenty years younger Tale – who now finds herself unable to paint – comes for the big opening. But what is left of their friendship? How can two people be put up against each other in a way that allows both of their histories to be accepted and understood? Together and on their own they must find out what relating to the other really entails. And how is it possible, what Mimi talks about, to relate to both the living and the dead?

Incontro is a novel that approaches basic questions with involvement, gentleness and precision.
