The Hexagon

Haslund, Ebba: Sekskanten

On August 12th, Ebba Haslund turned 90. She also released her first novel in seventeen years, a well-written story that casts an oblique glance on the elderly as well as the younger ones.

This is the story about the sewing circle, «the hexagon», and the six women who have stuck together since graduating from high school in 1944. The women’s life stories are told through a series of brief flashbacks, revealing comical situations, sorrowful memories, friendships, fear, compassion and irritation.

In addition to the members of the sewing circle, we particularly get to know the Berge family, Lillemor, an 81-year-old widow, her four middle-aged children, and some of her grandchildren. The life of the family is described in interaction and, sometimes, in opposition to the lives of her friends from the circle and to society as a whole.

The Hexagon ended up as the nr. 10 bestselling book in Norway 2007.
