The Sound of a Lute
Henriksen, Vera: Klangen av en lutt
Integral to Vera Henriksen's many vivid and insightful historical novels is her five-volume series of books on Bent Jonsson. The Sound of a Lute is the first of two volumes built around the lute-player and Jesuit priest Jon Bentsson, Bent Jonsson's son.
Fleeing England, Jon Bentsson returns to his rural birthplace in Norway, which he had left a quarter of a century earlier for the purpose of studying. As a Jesuit spy, he has travelled Europe far and wide; now he is being hunted as a traitor. On his father's farm, Jon recounts the story of his travels and travails, and eventually expresses a wish to build a new life on what remains of his vows of obedience, poverty and chastity.
