Nilsen, Tove: Øyets sultAmziz Shabaz Kumar Sen, an Indian living in Norway, is on the run form the police. He is a suspect for a crime he does not know what is and it is in this situation, with the police chasing him, that he recaps his life, tells his story: I have been too immodest. That is my crime. I have wanted too much, as much as the great explorers, the ones who did not give up, even though the risk was “tipping over the horizon”. Maybe this is the crime itself.
We are taken on a journey through major parts of Europe where everyday occurrences, childhood memories, dream and reality are intertwined. The novel is an attack of what the author perceives as European pompousness, chauvinism and elaborated faith in ones own excellence – and this attitude’s meeting with differently minded cultures.
Tove Nilsen was awarded the Norwegian Council’s Literature prize for this novel in 1993.
