Purification

Renberg, Tore: Renselse

One Friday in the beginning of December 1988, Jacob Malde gets into his Volkswagen Polo to head West. He is going back to his childhood home to follow his father to the grave. But he is also out on another, larger errand. Jacob Malde is making up for years of passivity: He is seeking his God. During the fatal journey from east to west Jacob’s lonely and private faith is realized in a series of horrific actions.

Jacob Malde is not a likeable person, but God might have said of him: “He wanted the good”.

“intensely present and poetically moving writing, a plunge into the soul of a tormented person, who sets thoughts and feelings in motion about the fundamental division between individual and society … a strong and gripping novel."
(Dagbladet)
