The Spring
Undset, Sigrid: VaarenLove and marriage is the main theme in The Spring, published in 1914. Torkild and Rose have grown up together and have always been fond of each other. Rose is dreaming of a man that can capture her to the degree that she becomes his property. Torkild on the other hand, is swarming for the cheerful Betzy. Despite of this, Rose and Torkild end up getting married. Rose conceives a stillborn child, and the grief drives them apart. The founding emotions between boy and girl, man and woman forms the basis for the development of the relationship between people in this novel. The author’s ability to vivify and depiction of characters is outstanding.
