Fates of the Poor
Undset, Sigrid: Fattige skjebnerIn Fates of the Poor, the depiction of the female mind is a central issue. As the title implies, the main character has a hard life, but the stories are all the same marked by plenty of humour and joy for life. We meet solidly sustained unsentimental realism and witty, precise satire in the portrayal of everyday existence. At the same time, however, there is always an undertone of tenderness and understanding in the descriptions of individuals like Selma Brøtter, Miss Smith-Tellefsen and Simonsen.
At its publication, Kristian Elster wrote in Dagbladet, Oslo:
“Clarity, perception and admirable honesty are this author’s most striking traits. But the more one immerses oneself in her art, the more one rejoice in its sincerity and its deep, warm humanity.”
