The Functionalist Arne Korsmo

Norberg-Schulz, Christian: The Functionalist Arne Korsmo

Without Arne Korsmo, modern Norwegian architecture would not have been the same. During the 1930s and also after the war, he was our main contact with architectural trends abroad, and through his activity as a creative architect, designer and teacher, he introduced us to the new ideas.
Arne Korsmo was an exceptional man. Although words were not his real means of expression, he was a poet in the true sense of the term. He was very sensitive to everything that surrounds us – nature, human life, manifestations of art – and was able to translate his experiences into beautiful houses and artefacts.

This book about Arne Korsmo is not only concerned with architecture, but also with the meaning of human presence in the world. Through quotations from his articles and lectures, and photographs and drawings of his works, Korsmo himself speaks directly to us. Thus we may share his aim: to smuggle some poetry and joy into the sober logic of our time.
