...Never More to Part... From Edvard Munch's Childhood and Youth in Christiania

Lande, Marit: ... for aldrig meer at skilles... Fra Edvard Munchs barndom og ungdom i Christiania

The motifs in several of Edvard Munch’s main works are based on childhood impressions and experiences. The importance of this period in the artist’s life has caused the author to pose the questions: What was Edvard Munch’s childhood like, apart from the tragic events that have so often been described? What sort of background influenced his father’s views and attitude to life? What was life like in the household of Christian Munch, the regimental doctor?

The author has gleaned information about the everyday life of the Munch family in Kristiania (Oslo) in the 1860s, ’70s and ’80s from letters and diaries, while Edvard Munch’s own childhood memories are taken from his "literary diaries", written when he was an adult. Seen together, these fragments provide a picture of his childhood and youth in Christiania and an intimate sense of a great artist.

The wealth of illustrations includes a number of Edvard Munch’s youthful works, several of which are here made public for the first time. The combination of illustrations, quotations from correspondence and journals as well as the author’s incisive analyses, makes this book a rare experience. It is as suitable for those acquainted with Munch’s works as it is for those to whom his art is relatively new.
