With Knowledge and Intent

Stubhaug, Arild: Med viten og vilje

Gösta Mittag-Leffler was the greatest personality in Swedish mathematics. He burned with enthusiasm for his science and became a “National Strategist”. Mittag-Leffler was fascinated by mathematics early on in life. He took a doctor’s degree and spent several years abroad, meeting the greatest mathematicians of his time. He became a professor in Helsinki, and later the first professor at the newly established Stockholm högskola.

Mittag-Leffler created the so-called Stockholm School, and he was a spearhead for Nordic mathematic research. He was made honorary doctor at six universities and an honorary member of just about every mathematical association worldwide.

In the 1880’s Mittag-Leffler founded the journal Acta Mathematica and made it one of the leading publishing channels for the mathematicians of the world, as it remains today. His impressive villa north of Stockholm is today the harbour of the Mittag-Leffler Institute, a significant international centre for mathematic research.

Owing to a uniquely rich source material, Arild Stubhaug manages to get up-close with Mittag-Leffler. At the same time he depicts a sharp image of the time. The book is illustrated throughout.

Praise for With Knowledge and Intent:

”A grand-scale family chronicle from the Swedish upper class – science, capitalism and intrigue. The language is captivating, the book is history; first-class history of culture and mentality.”
