Cold War, Warm Friendships

Johansen, Jahn Otto: Kald krig, varme vennskap. Erindringer fra en stor og en liten verden

Full title: Cold War, Warm Friendships. Memories from Worlds Large and Small

In this book of memoirs Jahn Otto Johansen picks up the thread of last year's book, Border Area, and again the emphasis is on the international political scene. What chiefly concerns the author, however, are close human relationships. Despite the Cold War and a divided world, some bonds remain indestructible: friendships that last no matter what the strains placed upon them. In his highly personal style the author draws telling portraits of people from east and west, at the same time, passionately and with his customary insight, describing the relevant political and historical background, be it the Yom Kippur war of 1973 or the Balkan crises of the 80s and 90s.
