The Three Gates of Love

Gran, Sissel: Kjærlighetens tre porter

A wise and positive guide through the different stages of love.

All love stories are full of minor and major turning points. Some are more serious than others. However, all relationships must make it through three turning points – or gates – if a love story is to have a

chance of developing.

The first gate is when you fall in love. If the infatuation can withstand the conflicts that might eventually arise, we proceed through the next gate, and a loving couple takes form. The third gate might appear after a brief period of time or after many years. This is the truly major test of love, and it requires that we get closer to the one that we love, unarmed and with the ability to leave the power struggle behind us.

Sissel Gran is a psychologist familiar to many for her column in the Sunday edition of the Oslo newspaper Aftenposten. Here she gives us a wise and positive guide to a better love life. She offers us great advice on how to get a better love life, and how during the early stages of a relationship, we can make a firm foundation for something lasting and solve conflicts in a constructive way.
