A Contemporary History of Psychiatry

Kringlen, Einar: Psykiatriens samtidshistorie

The book traces the development of psychiatry from the early 1800s until today, the main focus resting upon the post - WW 2 period. Professor Kringlen shows how cultural and political events, together with findings from psychiatric research and other advances in the area, have affected the medical paradigm. He makes a case, for instance, for a connection between contemporary cultural tides and the emergence of psychoanalysis in the US. He also gives an account of the impact that American and, to some extent, British psychiatry has had on European psychiatric thinking. A well-written book, richly illustrated with stirring photos.
