The Myth Calendar - Winter

Nordby, Terje: Mytekalender - vinter

Terje Nordby’s radio program “The Myth Calendar” has been broadcasted on NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) P2 at 06.50 in the morning, and has been referred to as “the best radio program in the world” by the newspaper Vårt Land. No other program in the history of P2 has received so much attention from listeners.

Now the program is here as a book. In The Myth Calendar – Winter the author serves us one myth for every day in December, January and February, and makes connections between our daily life and the universe of cultural history.

The myths origin from Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Indian and Norse mythology, the world religions, Russian folk tales, Icelandic folklore, literary characters and historical figures. The topics stretch over a vast area, both in content and time. There is everything from the awakening of Buddha, Zarathustra’s songs and Kipling’s The Jungle Book to Charles Darwin and Bulgarian grandmothers.

The author’s curiosity and overwhelming knowledge, his sense of humour, great skill in wording and resilient associations, give the days throughout winter a lift. The book’s extensive index also makes it a great work of reference on myths and mythical characters.

The Myth Calendar – Winter is the first volume in a series that will cover the entire year.

Praise for The Myth Calendar:

“He draws from unbelievably rich sources, cross bears, sees connections. The effervescent curiosity transforms every day’s dosage of myths into a small piece of art, both in language and storytelling.”
