Mulitcultural Understanding
Eriksen, Thomas Hylland (ed.): Flerkulturell forståelseThe topics raised in this book concern the challenges facing a changing world. What will happen in the "high-speed-century" where distances are dwindling, making possible contact between peoples that are not naturally close? In what way will national images feel challenged and threatened?
This book is written by influential and committed experts from a variety of disciplines which address such issues as ethnic and national identity, discrimination, fundamental rights, ethnicity and language, prejudices and cross-cultural communication. It sets out to provide some background information about the different peoples that make up the population of a small country like Norway so as to facilitate an understanding of the relationships between them. It examines the particular cultural processes that influence social interaction in today?s society and suggests approaches that will be of practical assistance when dealing with a variety of different situations where peoples from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds meet.
The book raises many controversial and complicated subjects, and warns that there is no unambiguous answer to some of the subjects raised. This book does however help readers to define the problem areas and it does so in a clear and well-informed manner.
