Understanding Migration
Fuglerud, Øyvind: Migrasjonsforståelse. Flytteprosesser, rasisme og globalisering.Full title: Migration processes, racism and globalisation.
Understanding Migration meets the need for a comprehensive work on migration. The book presents and debates themes related to migration studies but with a particular emphasis on social and cultural issues. The author shows that migration is far from a recent phenomenon, and that familiarity with its historical manifestation is essential to develop an understanding of the contemporary disarray facing the world. The book is divided into four parts. The first deals with themes addressed by older migration studies. The second presents examples from scandinavian migration and ethnicity studies. The third explores refugee issues and protection mechanisms, while the final part discusses links between migration and globalism.
Dr. polit. øivind Fuglerud is a social anthropologist and researcher at NOVA - Norwegian Social Research, Oslo. Among other things, he has published Life on the Outside: The Tamil Diaspora and Long-distance Nationalism (1999).
