Research Methods in Sociology and Political Science

Hellevik, Ottar: Forskningsmetode i sosiologi og statsvitenskap

This book gives an introduction to the most common methods employed in empirical research in sociology and political science. Using a data matrix for classification, the chapters deal with the different stages of a research project; from the approach being determined, to the result of the analytical interpretation. Within this framework the statistical analysis is given a more thorough treatment than is the norm in an introductory textbook into methodology. This book does not presuppose that the reader has any prior expertise and only makes use of simple mathematics.

The book was first published in 1970. In this, the fifth revision, the main structure from previous editions has been retained. However, the language has been subjected to a thorough revision and some changes have been made to conform to new technologies and methods.

This well-structured book has already sold over 50 000 copies and, after its thorough revision, this new edition emerges as even more relevant to the present both from a professional and pedagogical perspective.

About the author: Ottar Hellevik is Professor at the Institute for Political Science, University of Oslo, and serves as leader of research projects at the institute, responsible for carrying out surveys on public opinion (MMI). The author has previously published several books on the methodologies of the social sciences, including Causal Analysis.
