Germany Breaking Up

Johansen, Jahn Otto: Tyskland i oppbrudd. Reisebrev fra vest

In this year's book Jahn Otto Johansen gives an account of his journeying throughout Western Germany, a region many people feel they know better than the eastern part of the country, but which nonetheless still has many surprises and interesting places in store. He talks to a courageous anti-racist clergyman in Lübeck, hobnobs with derelicts and bohemians in Hamburg, meets women who refuse to knuckle under in the distressed areas of Bremen, drinks water from the gutter in the model environmental town of Freiburg and sets out to find the new Bavaria tucked away behind the boisterousness of the beer halls.
