Third Left

Marsdal, Magnus and Bendik Wold: Tredje venstre - for en radikal individualisme

This book has done well in the Norwegian market since its release in October 2004. It has received much attention and sparked debates in major, national newspapers and TV channels. It is welcomed as a thought-provoking ideological statement from two young radicals within "the new movements".

Third Left aims to tackle head-on one a profound ideological challenge facing the emerging left forces at the dawn of this century: Individualism. Individualism is a problem because neoliberalist society is widely perceived as an individualist order. It stands in contrast to what many recall as the collectivist, rigid and statist orders of Eastern ‘ communism’ and Western social democracy. The ideological power of neoliberal individualism is all the more overwhelming because it resonates so well with the depoliticised politics of «postmodernism» and with the entertainment industries’ spectacular constructions of a consumerist culture.

Third Left sets out to unravel this matrix of bourgeois individualism. And then the authors go looking for a way out.
