The Power of the Market (over our minds)

Tranøy, Bent Sofus: Markedets makt over sinnene Original Norwegian title: Markedets makt over sinnene

Market fundamentalism is the dominating ideology of our time. The Norwegian author Bent Sofus Tranøy has written a book of high relevance to all Western countries.

According to Tanoy, market fundamentalism is the dominating ideology of our time. Market fundamentalists believe that society as far as possible should be organised according to the free market principles, and that what happens within the market is beyond criticism because it is inherently just and efficient. This book moves behind the fundamentalists’ utopia and investigates what really happens within the market. It argues that the market, far from being an efficiency instrument, is an arena for the execution of power, that there are numerous sources of market power, and that big corporations, leaders and brokers have the upper hand. If we take a look beyond these illusions, it allows us to re-open all the questions the fundamentalists have successfully sealed off: Is the market efficient and fair? Is freedom of choice in all possible areas a guarantee for a good life, or rather a source of stress?
