In Honour of Fadime: Murder and Shame
Wikan, Unni: For ærens skyld. Fadime til ettertanke.Honour murders are not about Islam. They are not justified by Islam. Honour killings are unknown of, and would be unheard of, in many Moslem countries. Honour murders on women are about controlling female sexuality and about the collective control of individuals. Also, a specific code of honour must exist to legitimise murder and reward it with honour.
Trough extensive insight in the Fadime case in particular, in the concept of honour in general and with her long experience as an anthropologist, Wikan gives a wise and nuanced contribution to our understanding of honour killings, as well as a powerful account of the women who have fought against it – often with their lives at stake.
