Norberg-Schulz, Christian
Architectural historian and architect Christian Norberg-Schulz (1926-2000) studied in Switzerland, Italy, Norway and the USA. In 1963 he received his Ph.D. from the Technical University in Trondheim. An expert in the modern architecture and Professor of Architecture at Oslo School of Architecture, he worked with younger architects in shaping several visionary projects in Oslo. His seminal PhD thesis Intentions in Architecture (1964) placed him in the front row among the world’s architectural theorists, a position he consolidated through an extensive authorship. His writing is greatly influenced by the Gestalt and phenomenological theories he read as a student. Christian Norberg-Schulz was best known for being a teacher and a researcher, and between 1963 and 1978, he was the editor of the magazine Byggekunst.
